The document that describes the XML query language proposal that was
discussed at the RETS conference in Phoenix (December 2004) can be seen on
the RETS web-site at:

During that meeting, there was a vote on which direction we would pursue
regarding the query language.  At the time, there were 3 options:

1) Xquery
2) Repair the ambiguities of existing DMQL, but keep it "flat"
3) A structured XML rendition of DMQL (as described in the above link)

Unfortunately, the meeting minutes are not posted there.  If anyone out
there remembers the outcome of that discussion and more importantly the
vote, please speak up.

This document is relevant also to the "SELECT statement" question, as this
is specifically covered as an area of extensibility in the above document.
